Tongue piercings: everything you need to know
History:
Tongue piercing has enjoyed growing popularity since the 1990s and has established itself as a multifaceted trend in the field of body modifications. Originally popular in the alternative scene, it now appeals to people of all styles.
Placement:
The tongue piercing is pierced vertically through the tissue in the middle of the front half of the tongue. Depending on the anatomy, it may be possible to pierce several tongues in a row, as well as side by side (see Venom Bites).
Jewelry:
For tongue piercings, barbells with a bar thickness of 1.6mm used. This jewelry is also the ideal shape after healing and can be replaced with a different material or other beads with decorations if necessary.
Healing time:
The healing time of a tongue piercing varies from person to person, but is usually between 4 and 8 weeks. During the first two weeks, the entire tongue swells, making it difficult to speak, eat and drink. Conscientious care during the healing phase as well as after eating and at regular intervals during the day is important. We recommend the care instructions to be followed exactly.
Dangers and complications:
As with any piercing, there are certain risks associated with tongue piercings, such as infections, allergic reactions, inflammation, scarring and tooth/gum problems. To minimize these risks, it is essential to be pierced by a professional piercer and to use high-quality jewelry.
Recommendation for care:
- Disinfect the piercing at least three times a day with a suitable piercing spray. We recommend using a mouthwash (Easy Piercing) or mouth spray (Prontolind mouth spray) according to the instructions.
- Avoid touching the piercing or playing with it with your teeth.
- Avoid animal dairy products, fruit or fruit juices, spicy or acidic food/drinks for the first 2 weeks.
- Drink enough water.
- Reduce / avoid smoking and drink little to no alcohol during healing.
- No wet kissing or oral sex during healing.
- If you are unsure about excessive swelling, redness or pain, come and see us.
Additional information:
- Pain: The stinging of a tongue piercing varies depending on the position of the piercing. In most cases, it is a short, burning sensation. The healing of a tongue piercing is unpleasant, as the tongue can swell considerably. However, the individual sensation of pain can vary.
- Costs: The cost of a tongue Piercing vary depending on the jewelry. Our prices start at CHF 65 including standard jewelry.
